Step 1 — 🎯 Pick a target role and its language

Stop asking which path is better; pick the work you want to do and the language you want to speak daily. Scan 5–10 recent postings for one role and list repeated responsibilities, tools, and verbs.

Common targets: SOC (defense/alerts), GRC (risk/policy), Project Management, Data/AI, Customer Support, Healthcare Admin, Sales/BDR, Entry Marketing.

Tip

Don’t pick GRC because it seems easier. Strong GRC needs clear writing, evidence, stakeholder skill, and technical understanding.

Step 2 — 🧪 Run the 30‑day test (SOC vs GRC)

Test both for 15 days each. SOC: read 5 SOC ads, learn SIEM/log/phishing basics, do a defensive lab/log analysis, and write a summary. GRC: read 5 GRC ads, learn risk/control/audit/framework terms, create a risk register or control mapping, and write a summary.

At day 30, decide: which work was more interesting, which you can explain clearly, and which produced stronger resume evidence.

Tip

If both appeal to you, go deep on ONE for 90 days while learning broadly in the background.

Step 3 — 🧭 Extract keywords and set up tracking

From 5–10 postings, collect keywords and phrases you’ll mirror in your resume. Track each job and your tailored version in a sheet.

Include role‑specific terms: e.g., member support, customer service, healthcare, communication, organization, problem‑solving (CS/health); Python, Zendesk, Intercom, API, JSON, basic SQL (CS/tech); risk, controls, audit, ISO 27001 (GRC).

  1. Create a Google Sheet to track jobs
  2. Mirror exact phrases from job ads
  3. Keep one tailored resume link per job

Sheet columns to start: Position Name, Job Type, Company Location, Description, URL, Customized Resume, Date Created, Posted At, Scraped At. If you automate later, map columns for strengths, weaknesses, risk, reward, overall fit, and justification.

Tip

Recruiters scan in an F‑pattern: top line, first bullet, then down the left. Put the most relevant words there.

Step 4 — 🧰 Choose your builder and set it up

Pick one primary platform for your resume. Keep one master template you control, then produce tailored variants per job.

PlatformWhat to do in this step
Google DocsStart a clean one‑page document. Use clear headings (Summary, Projects, Skills, Education), 0.5–0.75" margins, and bullet points. Manually reorder sections to lead with the most relevant evidence instead of strict reverse‑chronological.
LinkedInTighten your Headline to the target role. In About, write a 3–5 line summary with keywords. Add Projects in Featured. Use a vertical skills list for the checkmark effect. Export to PDF if needed. Avoid overloading; front‑load the best 100 characters.
ChatGPTUse prompts (below) to draft summaries and bullets. Ask for Markdown ATX headings and tight bullets. Then paste into Docs/LinkedIn. Use Claude to soften tone or fix grammar without making it overly formal.
Make.comCreate a new Scenario for tailoring: Webhook (job post) → OpenAI (customize bullets) → Google Docs (create copy) → Google Sheets (log link). Add later modules as needed.
n8nCreate a new Workflow: Trigger → OpenAI (analysis) → Information Extractor (name/email) → Google Docs (write) → Google Sheets (log) → optional subflows for proposal/diagram. Connect Google APIs later.
Tip

Template most text yourself and let AI fill small portions. Full AI‑generated resumes are unpredictable and harder to control.

Step 5 — 🧱 Build a no‑experience structure that works

Use a one‑page layout: Targeted headline, 3–5 line Summary, Projects (2–4), Skills (grouped), Education/Certs, and optional Volunteering. Each project gets a one‑line outcome and 2–3 quantified bullets.

Link to proof (GitHub, Google Doc, Loom demo) instead of attaching heavy files.

  1. Lead with relevance, not chronology
  2. 2–3 high‑leverage projects > long lists
  3. Quantify and link proof

Step 6 — 🖊️ Write tight summaries and bullets with prompts

Prompt — Student/Fresher Summary
You are a hiring manager for [ROLE]. Draft a 3–5 line resume Summary using the keywords from this job post:

[PASTE JOB POST]

Context:
- Education: [DEGREE], [SCHOOL]
- Coursework/Clubs: [COURSEWORK/CLUBS]
- Projects: [PROJECT TITLES]
- Tools: [TOOLS]

Rules:
- Mirror key phrases naturally
- 2 short value statements + 1 proof line
- Use Markdown ATX headings and 2–3 bullets for Highlights
- Keep tone direct, no fluff
Prompt — Career Switcher to SOC
Act as a SOC L1 hiring manager. Create: (1) 3–5 line Summary, (2) 3 project bullets using SIEM/log/phishing language.

Inputs:
- Past background: [BACKGROUND]
- Labs completed: [LABS]
- Tools: [TOOLS]
- Job post: [JOB PASTE]

Rules:
- Include terms like alerts, triage, EDR, phishing investigation, Windows event logs
- Quantify impact where possible
- Output in Markdown with a Highlights subsection
Prompt — Career Switcher to GRC
Act as a GRC analyst hiring manager. Write (1) a 3–5 line Summary, (2) 3 bullets that show risk registers, controls, supplier review, and framework mapping.

Inputs:
- Past background: [BACKGROUND]
- Evidence built: [EVIDENCE]
- Frameworks: [FRAMEWORKS]
- Job post: [JOB PASTE]

Rules:
- Use precise language (risk owner, control design, ISO 27001 mapping, third‑party risk)
- Avoid vague statements like 'interested in GRC'
- Output in Markdown with crisp bullets
Prompt — Customer Support / Healthcare Admin
Act as a hiring manager for [ROLE]. Draft (1) Summary (3–5 lines) and (2) 4 bullets mirroring these tasks: processing records, authorizations, patient assistance, ticketing, email/phone comms, accuracy.

Inputs: [JOB PASTE], Tools: [ZENDESK/INTERCOM/MS OFFICE]
Rules: Mention accuracy, HIPAA if applicable, and documented processes. Keep bullets short and quantified.
Prompt — Entry Project Manager
Write a PM Summary and 3 bullets that demonstrate schedule planning, sequencing, estimating, Gantt building, stakeholder coordination.

Inputs:
- Mini‑project: [PROJECT]
- Tools: [EXCEL/GOOGLESHEETS]
- Methods: [CPM/NETWORK DIAGRAMS]
- Job post: [JOB PASTE]

Rules: Use PM terms (lead, lag, rolling wave, critical path). Keep to action + outcome format.
Prompt — Data/AI Entry Roles
Create a Summary and 3 bullets for an entry Data/AI role.

Inputs:
- Coursework: [STATS/ML]
- Projects: [EDA/CLASSIFICATION/REGRESSION]
- Tools: [PYTHON/NUMPY/PANDAS/SEABORN/MATPLOTLIB]
- Job post: [JOB PASTE]

Rules:
- Mention data cleaning, EDA, model selection, cross‑validation
- Keep to 2 lines per bullet and quantify results
Tip

Use Claude to fix grammar/tone without sounding overly formal. Ask for Markdown ATX so it ports cleanly into Docs.

Step 7 — 🧪 Build quick, explainable evidence (projects)

Create 2–4 role‑appropriate projects you can explain clearly. Each should be reproducible and linkable.

SOC: a basic SIEM/log analysis lab, a Windows event log write‑up, a phishing email analysis, or a TryHackMe/Hack The Box defensive path with notes.

GRC: a sample risk register, a basic security policy, a mock supplier review, or mapping controls to Essential Eight/ISO 27001/CPS 234.

PM: build a schedule management plan, sequence activities (CPM/network diagram), estimate durations, and produce a Gantt chart in Excel.

Data/AI: EDA, handle missing data (median for skewed), normalization/standardization, regression vs classification, cross‑validation, regularization, and model evaluation.

Tip

Avoid vague bullets like “completed labs.” State exactly what you investigated, how, tools used, and what you found.

Step 8 — 🔢 Quantify outcomes and mirror keywords

Turn duties into outcomes. Use numbers and accuracy. Example: “Processed 500+ records weekly at 99% accuracy (QA audited).”

Mirror exact job language: e.g., HIPAA, medical records, terminology (health); Zendesk, Intercom, API, JSON, basic SQL (support/tech); Python/EDA/EDA terms (data); ISO 27001/third‑party risk (GRC).

Step 9 — 🔄 Translate non‑technical experience

Reframe current/previous roles into target‑relevant impact. If you handled a cable or server room, mention uptime, documentation, and coordination (networking). If you supported customers, mention multi‑channel support and resolution time. For healthcare admin, list records processing, authorizations, and communication accuracy.

Add brief role‑specific daily tasks to show context fit (tickets, emails, phone, documentation).

Step 10 — 🧼 Format, proof, and link proof

Keep it one page, clean typography, consistent spacing, and tight bullets. Link to proof (Docs, GitHub, Loom) rather than attaching heavy files. Export to PDF for delivery.

Have ChatGPT/Claude do a light grammar pass. Keep your voice; avoid flowery language.

Tip

Don’t overload LinkedIn or your resume with every detail; too much info makes you look overqualified or unfocused.

Step 11 — ✉️ Apply, then do targeted outreach

Apply with your tailored resume and cover note. Then reach out to three people: (1) recruiter/hiring manager, (2) someone in the role, and (3) a sales or adjacent leader, to learn and get noticed. Prefer email to avoid LinkedIn inbox overload.

Use short, specific messages that show you read the role and you’re eager without being pushy.

Template — Short pitch (mention AI tailoring)
Subject: [Personalized hook for [Name]]

Hi [Name], quick note—applied for [ROLE]. I used AI to scrape the post, tailor my resume to your keywords, and find contacts. If helpful, I can walk you through exactly how I’d do [KEY TASK] in week one. Open to a quick chat?
Tip

If a hiring manager asks for an application number you don’t have, politely email the company’s recruiting or careers inbox requesting help.

Step 12 — 🧑‍💼 Prep for interviews (fast)

Research: company name, age, mission, leadership on LinkedIn. Print the job post and highlight your matching bullets.

Prepare examples of solving tough customer problems, staying calm under pressure, and going above and beyond. Practice a 45–60 second 'Tell me about yourself' mapped to the role.

  1. Re‑read the job post before each call
  2. Have 2–3 STAR stories ready
  3. Keep answers concrete and recent

Step 13 — 🤖 Optional: Automate tailoring with Make.com or n8n

Automate job intake → resume tailoring → Google Doc → Google Sheet log. Use Apify to scrape public postings, an LLM to tailor bullets, and Docs/Sheets to store results. Do not auto‑apply; keep a human in the loop.

PlatformWhat to do in this step
Make.comScenario A (scrape): Apify 'Indeed bulk scraper' → Google Sheets (append job). Scenario B (tailor): Watch for Apify run completion → OpenAI (customize resume) → Google Docs (create doc) → Google Sheets (store link). Add a Switch module if you ingest resume files (Word/PDF/Text) to branch extraction logic.
n8nWorkflow: Trigger → OpenAI node (customize) → Information Extractor (first/last/email) → Google Docs (write) → Google Sheets (log) → optional subflows. Add a Switch node for file MIME types if parsing uploads.
Prompt — OpenAI: customize resume to job post
System: You are a precise resume tailor. Return JSON with keys: summary, top_skills[], tailored_bullets[], keywords[], risks[], tone.

User: Here is my base resume (Markdown):
[BASE_RESUME_MD]

Here is the job post:
[JOB_POST]

Rules:
- Mirror employer keywords naturally
- Output 4–6 high‑impact bullets
- Keep ATS‑friendly language
- No emojis or tables
Tip

Avoid auto‑applying to jobs from scrapers; it can violate terms and hurt your reputation. Keep the human review step.

Step 14 — 🔌 Configure Apify, Google, and OpenAI (for automation)

Apify: create an API key, understand actor → task → dataset. Set search params (e.g., title, location, max items) for the Indeed bulk scraper task.

Google: for n8n, create a Google Cloud project, enable Sheets API, configure OAuth consent, create OAuth client credentials (web app), add n8n redirect URI, then paste client ID/secret in n8n and sign in. For Make.com, authorize Sheets/Docs modules when prompted.

OpenAI: create a secret key and add it to your Make.com or n8n OpenAI module.

  1. Apify: Actor → Task → Dataset
  2. Google: Sheets API + OAuth client
  3. LLM: add OpenAI key to module
Tip

Google may show an OAuth warning; click Advanced and proceed with permissions. Use better models for higher quality, but expect higher compute cost.

Step 15 — 🧪 Test, log, and harden the workflow

Execute a test run with sample inputs. Log each job to Google Sheets: date/time, resume link, strengths, weaknesses, risk, reward, overall fit, justification. Use Hookdeck to introduce long delays and replay if you need more than native sleep limits.

Use retry/backoff modules, a Break module to pause/retry on rate limits, and Ignore to continue on recoverable errors. Prefer JSON‑in/JSON‑out for LLM steps to parse outputs reliably.

  1. Store tailored doc link per job
  2. Exponential backoff on APIs
  3. Validate JSON from LLMs
Tip

Enable storing incomplete executions so you can resume after transient failures. Test Hookdeck by POSTing to its webhook and verifying delayed delivery.

Step 16 — 🧠 n8n agent enhancements (optional power‑ups)

In n8n, add an AI agent node to analyze resume vs job description and output strengths, weaknesses, risk, reward, overall fit, and justification. Use a structured output parser to enforce JSON fields.

Add three subflows if you also freelance: generate application copy, a Google Doc proposal, and a Mermaid diagram from a job description.

Prompt — Mermaid diagram (proposal aid)
Your task is to take as input an Upwork job description and return as output a Mermaid diagram that I can visualize using a subsequent Mermaid live editor.

Rules:
- Only output flowcharts (graph TD)
- No backticks or extra text
- First character must be 'g'

Example:
graph TD
A[Receive email from Facebook lead ads] --> B[Add to CRM]
B --> C[Send customized SMS]
Prompt — Proposal JSON (freelance use)
You are a helpful intelligent proposal writer.
I'm an automation specialist applying to jobs on freelance platforms.
Your task is to take as input an Upwork job description and return as output JavaScript object notation for a customized proposal which I'll upload to Google Docs.

High performing proposals:
- Title of system
- Brief explanation
- "I created a step‑by‑step for you"
- Why I’m a fit (context‑specific)
- Left‑to‑right build steps
- About me bullets

Rules:
- Casual Spartan tone, no emojis
- If a name is in the job, include it
- Return step‑by‑step bullets delimited with \- and backslashes
- Avoid money/number social proof
- First‑person language
Tip

Don’t overload a single agent. Keep name/email extraction in a separate Information Extractor node for reliability.

Step 17 — 🗂 Track outreach and follow‑ups

Use your Google Sheet as a light ATS: job link, resume variant link, who you contacted, date sent, and next follow‑up. Use multiple channels (email, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter) for outreach to increase visibility without spamming.

If needed, send a polite follow‑up after 5–7 days.

Step 18 — 🧩 Optional: Candidate pipeline sandbox (Typeform → ClickUp → Make.com)

If you want an operations project for your resume, build a mini candidate intake pipeline. Create a Typeform with required contact fields and a Loom link. In ClickUp, add matching custom fields (first/last/email/phone, Loom link, stage, assignee).

In Make.com, watch new Typeform responses, map a true/false field to ClickUp dropdown IDs, and send an interview invite email with a calendar link. Trigger ClickUp webhooks on stage changes (e.g., Interview One/Two). Optionally, integrate a calendar webhook (e.g., Cal.com) to auto‑update stages after booking.

  1. Typeform → ClickUp fields mapped
  2. Stage webhooks to drive emails
  3. Calendar webhooks optional
Tip

Use a two‑step Typeform design: watch new responses, then list responses to retrieve mapped answers cleanly for testing and maintenance.

Step 19 — 🧠 Role‑specific keyword packs and examples

SOC — daily: monitor alerts, review logs, triage incidents, investigate phishing, endpoint alerts, response playbooks, documentation. Evidence: SIEM/log labs, phishing analyses, Windows event logs.

GRC — daily: policies/standards, risk registers, control assessments, supplier reviews, regulatory mapping. Frameworks: Essential Eight, Information Security Manual, ISO 27001, privacy obligations, third‑party risk, internal audit, CPS 234 (AU). Avoid weak lines like “interested in GRC;” show registers/controls.

Project Management — processes: plan schedule management, define/sequence activities, estimate resources/durations, develop and control schedule; terms: lead, lag, rolling wave; methods: CPM, network diagrams, critical chain; procurement: cost‑plus, fixed price, T&M; conflict resolution: compromising, problem‑solving, smoothing, accommodating; quality audits done by an independent team.

Data/AI — foundations: what a model is, training vs inference, alignment, scaling, sampling, evaluation; algorithms: linear/logistic regression, k‑NN, decision trees, random forest, SVM, XGBoost, CatBoost; workflow: data collection, cleaning, EDA, feature engineering, cross‑validation, hyperparameter tuning, ensemble learning; Python basics: lists, tuples, dicts, sets; recognize semi‑supervised and reinforcement learning; evaluate regression by error closeness, classification by accuracy.

Customer Support/Healthcare — highlight accuracy, documentation, HIPAA (if relevant), Microsoft Office, ticketing; include member support, communication, problem‑solving. If you have any accounts receivable or invoice processing, surface it for ops roles. For healthcare advocacy/enrollment roles, note outreach, caregiving, dementia challenges, CRM familiarity, and tech comfort.

Step 20 — 📨 Extra scripts you may need

Template — If you pivot into Sales/BDR cold outbound
Subject: Quick question
Hi [Name], I found you when looking for [industry/type] in [location]. I love [specific thing]. We build AI‑powered [system] for [type] and I wondered if you’d be interested in what that could look like. Our system increases [result] and we just finished raising a [round]. I’m confident it outperforms what you have. Worth a call?

Thanks,
[Your Name]
Template — Cold email (AI automation pitch)
Subject: Build an AI Agent to Scale Your Business Without Hiring
You as a solo founder or small team want to scale but can’t because hiring requires capital and you’re stuck at a ceiling. AI agents and automation can help you grow past these limits. Here’s how it works...
Template — Freelance: ask client to close contract and review
Would you mind ending the contract and leaving an honest review of your experience? This helps me on Upwork a ton. If you’re new to the process, I found a quick guide. I can also walk through it with you. I’ll leave you one too.

Alternate:
Would you mind closing the contract for now and leaving a written review? It helps me rank in search and reach new jobs. Happy to work together again anytime—just send a new offer.

Third:
Hey, could you do me a favor and be the one to end our contract? If a freelancer closes it, the client often isn’t prompted to review. If you close it, it prompts you to leave a written review (optional) which makes it more likely I’ll get one.
Tip

Most messages get buried on LinkedIn. When possible, email the hiring manager or team lead for better visibility.

Step 21 — ✅ Final checks before sending

Verify contact info, links, and consistent formatting. Check for state/location restrictions on remote roles. Export to PDF and attach or link to your Google Doc.

If you built automations, run one final dry run and verify the tailored doc and sheet row were created correctly.

Mistakes to avoid

⚠️
Letting AI write everything

Template your resume; have AI fill only small, controlled parts. It’s more predictable and consistent.

⚠️
Vague project bullets

“Did labs” is weak. Specify logs investigated, tools used, and findings.

⚠️
No metrics

Without measurable outcomes, you’re invisible. Add throughput, accuracy, or response times.

⚠️
Overloaded LinkedIn

Too much info makes you look overqualified or unfocused. Front‑load relevance.

⚠️
Auto‑applying from scrapers

Can violate terms and hurt your brand. Keep a human review step.

⚠️
Ignoring the job post

Interview without re‑reading the posting leads to mismatched answers.

⚠️
LinkedIn DMs only

Everyone messages there; your note gets buried. Email the hiring manager when possible.

⚠️
Certs without evidence

Certs alone won’t carry you. Add small, explainable projects.

⚠️
Bad workflow hygiene

No retries, no JSON parsing, or wrong file IDs will break automation at scale.
